Which car has the biggest boot? The litre figure is lying to you

We measured the depth, width between the wheel arches and height of every boot in our database. Sorting by litres and sorting by usable floor gives you two different winners, and only one of them is useful.

Every car brochure gives you one number for the boot: litres. It is measured to a standard, it is honest, and it is close to useless for the question you actually have, which is whether a specific object goes in.

How the litre figure is made

Boot volume is measured by filling the space with small standardised blocks and counting them. That method rewards any space that exists, including the awkward slivers beside the wheel arches and the tall gap up to the roof that you cannot use without blocking the rear window.

Two boots can post the same figure and behave completely differently. A long, flat load floor and a short, deep well both hold 500 litres of blocks. Only one takes a folded pushchair lying flat.

The three measurements that decide it

  • Depth, from the tailgate to the rear seat backs. This is what stops long objects: flat-pack, skis, a bike with the front wheel off.
  • Width between the wheel arches. The narrowest point of the floor. This is the one that stops most things, and the one no manufacturer publishes. Across our database it ranges from about 89 cm to 121 cm, a much narrower spread than the litre figures suggest.
  • Height to the parcel shelf. What stops bulky things. Under about 40 cm and the chunkier travel systems stop going in without removing the cover.

Sort by the dimension your problem has

That is why our comparison table lets you sort by each measurement separately rather than by a single score. If you carry something long, sort by depth. If you carry something wide and flat, sort by width between the arches. If you are shopping for a pushchair, height to the shelf is the number to watch.

The practical answer to “which car has the biggest boot” is usually an estate rather than an SUV of the same length. SUVs post big litre figures because they are tall, but the useful floor underneath is often shorter than the estate’s, and the load lip is higher.

The load lip nobody mentions

One more measurement matters and rarely appears anywhere: how high you have to lift things over the rear bumper. On an estate it is typically 60 to 65 cm, on a large SUV 75 to 80 cm. That difference is invisible in litres and very obvious when you are lifting a pushchair with a baby on your other arm, several times a day, for three years.

It depends what you mean. By quoted litres, large estates and seven-seat SUVs win. By usable floor area — depth multiplied by the width between the wheel arches, which is what limits a large flat object — the order changes, because litres reward tall boots that you cannot actually stack to the roof.

Is a bigger boot always more useful?+

No. A deep, narrow boot with a high load lip is worse for a pushchair than a shallower one that is wide between the arches and low to load. Width between the arches is the measurement that stops most objects and almost nobody publishes it.

How much boot do I need for a pushchair?+

Most folded pushchairs are 70 to 90 cm long, 45 to 62 cm wide and 25 to 50 cm tall. A boot with 95 cm between the arches and 45 cm to the parcel shelf takes almost all of them lying flat. Under 40 cm of height is where the bulky travel systems start failing.
